I wanted to share my lady luck/gambling inspired outfit that I wore on our first night of this trip to continue with Vegas content, but also to share a major life update that fits with my post’s title.

July was ending and it hit me that I had completed a year in my current position and I was not looking forward to the new school year.  I made a decision that had been on my mind for a while. After working at the university for over 7 years, I decided it was time to try something different and I resigned from my position as an event specialist.

Now, I want to make sure I share I didn’t make this decision on a whim, although I am taking a gamble on myself and trying something different.

I went to school and worked at the same place for almost 10 years total, and it felt like it was going to be the only thing I knew unless I changed something. I could have been complacent and stuck to the career ladder at the University, but I felt like I could be doing more than what I felt I was stuck doing in my day job.

I learned a lot about myself this last year, especially when it comes to what I am capable of when left to work alone in an office that is understaffed. I became more resourceful and more aware of what I need in order to be happy at work. I need to be around people that are motivated, which is why I was at my first job after college for so long. I wasn’t passionate about safety, but I was around a lot of people who were and were motivated to do good. I missed having that fuel to motivate me to produce my best work, but I also learned I need to have a little more creative freedom than my workplace really had room for. My blog had been that creative outlet until the wedding planning crunch took over, and I haven’t seemed to regain my balance since then and moving into our new home, but regaining balance is something I am working on.

I am still trying to find my footing since so much has changed since last year, but I recognize I have a lot of privilege in stepping away from work for a minute. Since moving up to come to complete my undergrad, I have worked and have never taken a clear break to figure out what I want to be as a grown-up, and this felt like the best time to do that. I am lucky to have a supportive husband and to also have rental income coming in to keep us afloat on one consistent source of income (more on that later.) I also make an okay amount as a reseller on Poshmark and have been focused on adding items to my closet these past few weeks since resigning in August. (If you’d like to shop what I’ve posted lately, my username is @willbakeforshoe.)

I am currently working on my design portfolio and figuring out my next steps in freelance work. It’s been more exciting than scary to have left the safety net of regular/predictable income, but I needed to be uncomfortable in order to really push myself and grow. My current motto since leaving my last job has been “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.” I am ready to change things up and hope to keep you as informed as I can when it comes to my struggles, failures, setbacks as well as my wins and success stories.
